Bolognese

Little Pawz -- Bolognese
BOLOGNESE

Good Points

  • Intelligent
  • Devoted to its owner
  • Quiet and subdued
  • Ideal for apartment dwellers

Take Heed

  • Serious and reserved
  • Distant with strangers
The city of Bologna, Italy gave its name to this bichon variety. Even in paintings from the Middle Ages one can see small dogs with the typical Bolognese hair. The Bolognese is an intelligent little dog with a slightly bristled, fluffy coat, dark eyes, and a large, black nose. It has a square body with a level back line, and the tail is carried rolled up on the back. The Bolognese has a strained and animated gait and is always subdued.

Size
Height: at the withers 10 – 12 inches (25 – 30 cm)
Weight: 5 – 9 lbs. (2.5 – 4 kg)

Coat and Colour
The coat of hair is long and fluffy, and it covers the body uniformly. Only at the front of the face is the hair somewhat shorter. The hair must be pure white in colour, with no coloured markings.

Exercise
The Bolognese will enjoy a romp or walk. It will fit well into city living and regular walks, but will enjoy the occasional off-the-lead country run and ball games in the yard.

Grooming
Brush daily making sure you don't brush too hard or the hair will lose its fluffy curls. The eyes of the Bolognese must be cleaned every day.

Feeding
Recommended would be 1/3 – 1/2 can name-brand dog food (13.3 oz 376 g size), with a biscuit, or 1 – 1 1/2 cups dry dog food. Always ensure that your Bolognese has ample fresh water.

Origins and History
For the origins and history of the Bolognese, please refer to the Bichon Frisé.
