Take Heed

The Chihuahua is keenly intelligent, fiercely protective and cheap to keep. Also, being the world's smallest dog, it is the least likely to fall foul of landlords.
The adult Chihuahua usually takes a few weeks to reveal its true personality, keeping its new owner under careful surveillance, perhaps giving the impression that it is shy. Actually, it is weighing up which of them is to be master in the home!

Coat and Colour (Short Coat)
In the smooth, the coat should be soft in texture, close and glossy. (Heavier coats with undercoats permissible.) Coat placed well over body with ruff on neck, and more scanty on head and ears. Any colour — solid, marked or splashed.
Coat and Colour (Long Coat)
It is said that the Long Coat variety was developed entirely in the United States by crossing the Short Coat to the Papillon and the Pomeranian. The Chihuahua has evolved primarily as a human companion. Any colour — solid, marked or splashed.
Exercise
Contrary to belief, the Chihuahua is ready, and able to walk as far as most owners would wish, although it doesn't object to an occasional ride in a shopping basket. The fact that its exercise requirements are moderate makes this breed an ideal choice of pet for the elderly.
Grooming
The Chihuahua should be groomed with a soft brush. A rub down with a velvet glove or wash cloth will make the coat gleam. Nails must be regularly clipped and the ears kept clean.
Feeding
The requirements of a very small Chihuahua should be 2 – 3 oz (57 – 85 g) of a name-brand can dog food, with a few puppy biscuits. Chihuahuas fare better on two or three small meals rather than one large daily meal. Bigger Chihuahuas can manage up to 1/2 can (13.3 oz 376 g size) dog food and a few dog biscuits. Always provide an ample supply of fresh water for your Chihuahua.
Health Care
Not as delicate as one might imagine, but Chihuahuas dislike the cold and appreciate a coat to keep them warm when out of doors in the winter. These little dogs are definitely not designed for kennel living.
Watch out for the molera, a small opening on top of the skull, unlike that od a baby, may never fill in, so a blow on the head could prove to be fatal. This breed is prone to 'snorts;' a spasm can often be cured by lifting the dog purposely up and down. They also have a tendency to shiver, a habit that evoked sympathy from onlookers and generally makes the owner seem like the villain of the piece, people wrongly imagining that the Chihuahua is terrified or frozen.
Origin and History
Named after the state of Chihuahua in Mexico, the Chihuahua is believed to have been the sacred dog of the Incas. Nevertheless, it seems likely that a few may have been used by the American Indians in their cooking pots. There is also a theory that Chihuahuas were once fierce little dogs living in holes in the ground, which could account for their inclination to huddle together in every warm nook and cranny.
