French Bulldog

Little Pawz -- French Bulldog
FRENCH BULLDOG

Good Points

  • Affectionate and devoted pet
  • Loves human company
  • Easy to train
  • Adaptable
  • Intelligent and alert

Take Heed

  • Lubricate facial creases with vaseline to prevent soreness
The French Bulldog is a devoted little dog and makes the ideal family pet. It has a keen, clownish sense of humour, is intelligent, and adapts well to city or country living. It is perhaps the healthiest of the Bulldogs and does not suffer from the over-developments or nasal difficulties of the Boston Terrier and the English Bulldog.

Size
Weight: Dogs: 28 lbs. (12.7 kg); Bitches: 24 lbs. (10.9 kg)

Coat and Colour
Acceptable colours are: all brindle, fawn, white, brindle and white, and any colour except those which constitute disqualification. The skin should be soft and loose, especially at the head and shoulders, forming wrinkles. Coat moderately fine, brilliant, short and smooth.

Exercise
Short, regular walks. Do not over-exert your French Bulldog in warm weather.

Grooming
Normal daily brushing and a rub down with a soft cloth is all that's needed to keep your French Bulldog looking its best.

Feeding
Recommended would be 1 – 1 1/2 cans (13.3 oz 376 g size) name-brand dog food with a biscuit, or 3 cups of a dry dog food. Always provide an ample supply of fresh water for your French Bulldog.

Origin and History
Credit must go to the French for the devlopment of this breed. It is, however, uncertain whether it derives from small English Bulldogs taken to France by Nottingham laceworkers in the 19th century, or from crossings with dogs imported to France from Spain. In any event, this delightful breed is clearly the descendant of small Bulldogs, and by the beginning of the 20th century it had found favour in both Britain and the United States.
