| SCOTTISH TERRIER (SCOTTIE) |
Good Points
- Straightforward and honest
- Reliable temperament
- Fine guard dog
- Utterly loyal
- Home-loving
Take Heed
- Has little time for strangers, best for a childless couple or unattached owner
The Scottish Terrier or Scottie has been aptly described as a gentleman. It is a honest dog that will not look for trouble, but on finding it will always fight fairly. It is a devoted companion to its owner, but has little time for strangers and is not the most suitable of dogs for a family with children. It will fight fox or badger, but enjoys itself just as much in an energetic ball game, and likes nothing better than carrying a stick or ball in its mouth. Altogether an attractive and sporty little dog.
Size
Height: 10 – 11 inches (25 – 28 cm)
Weight: should be 19 – 23 lbs. (8.6 – 10.4 kg)
Coat and Colour
Coat rather short, about 2 inches (5 cm), dense undercoat with outer coat intensely hard and wiry. Colour steel or iron grey, brindled or grizzled, black, sandy or wheaten. White markings are objectionable and can be allowed only on the chest and that to a slight extent only.
Exercise
The Scottish Terrier loves nothing more than being out of doors and it would be wrong to deprive it of romps in the yard or regular walks severla times a day. It can live happily either indoors or in an outdoor kennel, heated in winter and colder weather.
Grooming
The Scottish Terrier needs daily brushing and combing, particularly its fine beard, and should be trimmed in spring and autumn.
Feeding
Recommended would be 1/2 cans (13.3 oz 376 g size) name-brand dog food, with a biscuit, or 3 cups dry dog food. Always provide an ample supply of fresh water for your Scottish Terrier.
Origin and History
The Scottish Terrier, once nown as the Aberdeen Terrier, and generally known as the Scottie, has existed in various forms for many centuries, but it was not until after 1800 that line breeding began. The first Scottish Terrier Club was formed in Scotland in 1892, when a standard was laid down for the breed.
Celebrity Owners
President George W. Bush owns a Scottie named Barney; and former president Franklin D. Roosevelt's Scottie was named Fala.
