SMOOTH FOX TERRIER

  • Good family pet
  • Second to none as a rat catcher
  • Smart appearance

Take Heed

  • Needs plenty of exercise
The word terrier comes from the Latin word "terra" meaning earth, and it is the job of the terrier to kill vermin and to worry the fox from its lair.

The Smooth Fox Terrier is arguably the smartest terrier bred for this purpose. It enjoyed almost unrivaled popularity just before and after WWII and is always a popular contender in the show ring, though it has been said that the elegance of this terrier has been attained at the expense of its former hunting ability. The Smooth Fox Terrier makes an ideal family pet.

Size
Height: Dogs: should not exceed 15-1/2 inches (39 cm) at the withers; Bitches: proportionately lower
Weight: Dogs: 16 – 18 lbs. (7.3 – 8.2 kg); Bitches: 15 – 17 lbs. (6.8 – 7.7 kg)

Coat and Colour
The coat should be smooth, flat, but hard, dense and abundant. The belly and underside of the thighs should not be bare. White should predominate; brindle, red, or liver markings are objectionable. Otherwise colour is of little or no importance.

Exercise
The terrier once called the little athelete of the dog world deserves a chance to live up to that title. It will adjust to a regular trot around the park but, deserves the opportunity for frequent off-the-lead runs, preferably in the country or in a secured dog park.

Grooming
Daily brushing with a stiff brush. If showing the Smooth Fox Terrier a little trimming is needed particularly to the inside and outside of the ears, jaw, and muzzle.

Feeding
Recommended would be 1/2 – 1 can (13.3 oz 376 g size) name-brand dog food with a biscuit, or 1 1/2 cups of a dry dog food. Always provide an ample supply of fresh water for your Smooth Fox Terrier.

Origin and History
The Smooth Fox Terrier has been around in its present form for at least 100 years. Before then, almost all terriers that went to earth were simply known as fox teriers.

It was in 1862 at the Birmingham, England, National Dog Show that the breed first made its debut in the show ring. Its ancestry probably came about through the terriers in the English counties of Cheshire and Shropshire.
